Rent: it’s every Londoner’s single biggest outgoing expense, and it just keeps getting bigger. You can’t afford to buy (and probably never will) and your parents have turned your old room into a study, so you’re just going to have to get used to chucking 600-odd quid down the drain every month.
Alternatively, you could move somewhere a little cheaper. And they don’t come much cheaper (not in Zone One, at least) than this £40 per week ‘loft conversion’ in Paddington, advertised on listings website Gumtree this week.
Naturally, that rock-bottom price tag means there are a couple of small catches. As the ad happily admits, there’s not actually enough room to stand up. There’s also the fact that your only window is, in fact, a door – one that presumably looks into someone else’s room. You’ll also have to be happy spooning a water tank every night…
“We are renting this cute little loft conversion which is a former storage space. Please note you cannot stand upright in the room. It comes with its own bedding (freshly washed), parquet flooring and there is enough space to store a few pieces of garment. The location is amazing, there are lots of shops, good transport and is right in the heart of Westminster. We are generally quite easy going but do not tolerate noise at night or disorderly behaviour. Ideally it would suit someone less than 5’4 tall and with no history of claustrophobia.”
Still, at a good £100 cheaper than the average London room, we’ve got to admit: we’re tempted. Think about it – at least you’d never lose your keys.
