London, the sepulchral city

``No, they did not bury me, though there is a period of time which I remember mistily, with a shuddering wonder, like a passage through some inconceivable world that had no hope in it and no desire. I found myself back in the sepulchral city resenting the sight of people hurrying through the streets to filch a little money from each other, to devour their infamous cookery, to gulp their unwholesome beer, to dream their insignificant and silly dreams. They trespassed upon my thoughts. They were intruders whose knowledge of life was to me an irritating pretence, because I felt so sure they could not possibly know the things I knew. Their bearing, which was simply the bearing of commonplace individuals going about their business in the assurance of perfect safety, was offensive to me like the outrageous flauntings of folly in the face of a danger it is unable to comprehend. I had no particular desire to enlighten them, but I had some difficulty in restraining myself from laughing in their faces so full of stupid importance.''
Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad (1902)

The horror! The horror!

The last book I bought in London, the evening before taking my flight, while I was waiting for my last date...

``Anything approaching the change that came over his features I have never seen before, and hope never to see again. Oh, I wasn't touched. I was fascinated. It was as though a veil had been rent. I saw on that ivory face the expression of sombre pride, of ruthless power, of craven terror -- of an intense and hopeless despair. Did he live his life again in every detail of desire, temptation, and surrender during that supreme moment of complete knowledge? He cried in a whisper at some image, at some vision -- he cried out twice, a cry that was no more than a breath:
 `` `The horror! The horror!'

As Natalino Balasso (an Italian comedian) says, in the past there were travellers, who went abroad to import knowledge to their country. Nowadays there are tourists, who go abroad to export ignorance. People who give in to many or even all comforts, to the last discovering of technology and work in crazy shifts just to have money for travelling. Because they want to meet different people, witness how they live in places which the majority of us ignore even the existence, and in this way get changed and be able to see their home with different eyes once they are back. But how much can you understand of a land as long you don't live on it? How much can you understand of locals if the only interaction you had with them has happened at the souvenir market? How much can you learn of the dynamics governing a country if you don't work with the locals and learn their uses? The answer is very little. Doesn't matter if you think differently.
To come to learn about a place and its inhabitants you must live and work in that place, learn the local language and folklore, adapt yourself to the local food. The title of “Traveller” is not for everyone. For sure it's not for youngster (some of them not even young any more) who move to London for work but go back home for Christmas, Eastern and Summer Holidays at least, and that after years in London all they now of the metropolis are tourist places (do you get it?) and the cool areas. I say London for it's part of my experience, but I'm sure there's no difference at all if I would say Berlin, Barcelona or Dublin. Just name a place.
The real Travellers are very few, the mass is made of tourists. A Londoner told me once that to be a Londoner yourself you must live in London at least 15 years, and he was right obviously. Being able to navigate the Tube smartly and quick and skilful to pick your oyster card from your handbag while walking doesn't make a Londoner of you. Also because the Londoners usually get stack at the gate in front of you. And you're not a Traveller because you're not there to learn, to understand. Even if with time you catch something by osmosis.
I met a real Traveller here in the Caribbean, a white South African who, like many, has to live abroad due to the racial laws implemented by black governments. He has lived in Australia, England, Ireland, British Virgin Islands and other countries who he had no time to tell me about yet. He doesn't do it for passion, he does it because he's forced to. In South Africa white people have no chance to get a job, doesn't matter how well qualified and experienced they are, because as usual the victims have become the oppressors, carrying out an ethnic cleansing supported by the UN. Such people will look to their own home with really different eyes, such people will really be made different by the land they live on. They learn what the good and the evil are for real. They live an inner conflict which tells them that their actions are wrong but they don't see any way out of their present situation, finally accepting it and carrying out their duties without questioning what will be tomorrow. The tourist can't even imagine what such a conflict is, happy of his fucking holiday and satisfied of having made life harder for people who live and work where he travelled to.

What do you want from me?

What do I want from you? I want you close. I want to see you smiling and hugging you when you are sad. I want you being the last thing I see when I fall asleep and the first one I see waking up. I want to listen at your breath. I want to fuck you in any possible moment and place. I want to look at you while you walk and observe you when you don't notice it. I want to feel bad when you feel bad and enjoy your successes. I want you, flesh and soul. And I don't care what's been in your past and who had you before me. I'm not interested in being the first. I want to be the last one.

Cosa vuoi da me?

Cosa voglio da te? Voglio averti vicina. Voglio scoparti in ogni momento e in ogni luogo possibile.

Lost in translation 2

Dear brothers on the other side/ we sung together on Earth/ a hundred of us loved the very same woman/ a thousand of us left to the same war/ This memory wouldn't comfort you/ when we die we die alone.
(The testament, Fabrizio De Andre')

Betrayed faces, faces who haven't understood, faces who lost their loved ones. We are a carousel of faces who don't deserve memory. Shedding the skin like a snake, getting rid of bonds and affections, forsaking people because forsaking is what the others will reserve to you. In a society which keep repeting that one can be really happy when one will be able to be happy in its own, I insist saying that people around us are the most important of all things: more important than places, more important than personal ambitions. A voice in the desert. There's no hope for a disimbodied society, for a community made up of singles who less and lesser have contacts with their neighbour.

I've got rid of you all

Io avevo solo voi e i luoghi dove ci incontravamo. E tutto cio' l'ho messo a vostra disposizione.

I will miss all that you used to organized at your home, a friend told few days before my departure. The meals, the card games and the Chinese cheques matches, the museum visits. I have to say, I answered, that nobody of you all has really appreciated my efforts. She didn't expect such an answer.
Five years in London have given and have taken. I underwent experiences which I would rather avoided, some interesting, many bad. I learned about myself through successes and failures and people I met and then lost. I had a love, who at such a point had preferred to leave for other lights she could probably understand better than mine, taking away much of me and everything I had built. I had beautiful moments, but I had already lost them. And even if it's true that we are the sum of all our experiences and I wouldn't be what I am without passing for London's cold hands, after five years the balance sheet is in negative. I've come to believe that I would wipe out without a doubt these five years, that I would gladly forget all the good things linked to London just to erase the evil she made to me, just to have back that little of gullibility which I took with me from Italy, hidden in my luggage without I noticed it.
Then, an afternoon, I looked at the photos in my mobile. Photos of people and places and objects and moments. They stretched till one year ago. And I haven't been so sure any more. I understood that probably I wouldn't be capable, even having the chance, to erase everything and become again as I was when I quit Italy. Even if now I miss some of those people, I don't want to forget what they taught me. Even if many experiences hurt me, I don't want to give up the strength I gained through them. Even if my lost love has left me with nothing to hold on to, I don't want to forsake the change she made in me. And maybe it's still early for a final balance. Some entries have not been recorded yet, among those an important one which could bring the balance in active again. So, better to wait before to establish which direction my life has got.
But what you all didn't understand is that when I left Italy I left there everything which was mine, I gave up my life. You kept your life. While you brought with you something which was only for you and I wasn't welcome to share with, I had nobody else than you. Nor brothers, nor sisters; not a father, neither a mother. Any friend to meet again and any place to go back to. I had only you and the places where we used to meet together. And all this I put at your disposition.

As I feared, here I am too busy living my life to have time and desire of imagining and representing it. As Mishima wrote, or you live or you make art. And as everyone who understood Baudelare knows, pain gives the impulse to the creative motion. You can get addict to some kind of sadness, grabbing it and refusing to let it go. Even if it hurts, even if it makes you bleed. You hold that sadness inside and at the right moment you distil it in words and make a story of it. But it is not life, it is only its representation, and it needs something new, a new pain to feed on, before it drains in repetition.

Now, more than the creativity, it's the necessity to create representations which is fading. The need disappears, together with the lack, the emptiness which created the need itself. But there are things about myself that I didn't understand yet, features of myself that I haven't been able to represent, passages written by divine hand which meaning got lost in translation.

Tu chiamalo se vuoi...

...paradiso fiscale.

You're not the first to say that I could have all the women I want. And as who before you, you don't understand what I see in you of special. Maybe you're right, but maybe you overrate me. And underrate yourself. But overall you overrate the women: are really few those who are worth the effort of winning them over. And since you believe me so capable, accept my judgement and stop denying those qualities that I see in you. Because I know that's just a posture ;)

Heart of Darkness

I demanded rivets. There was a way—for an intelligent man. He changed his manner; became very cold, and suddenly began to talk about a hippopotamus; wondered whether sleeping on board the steamer (I stuck to my salvage night and day) I wasn’t disturbed. There was an old hippo that had the bad habit of getting out on the bank and roaming at night over the station grounds. The pilgrims used to turn out in a body and empty every rifle they could lay hands on at him. Some even had sat up o’ nights for him. All this energy was wasted, though. ‘That animal has a charmed life,’ he said; ‘but you can say this only of brutes in this country. No man— you apprehend me?—no man here bears a charmed life.’ He stood there for a moment in the moonlight with his delicate hooked nose set a little askew, and his mica eyes glittering without a wink, then, with a curt Good-night, he strode off. I could see he was disturbed and considerably puzzled, which made me feel more hopeful than I had been for days. It was a great comfort to turn from that chap to my influential friend, the battered, twisted, ruined, tin-pot steamboat. I clambered on board. She rang under my feet like an empty Huntley & Palmer biscuit-tin kicked along a gutter; she was nothing so solid in make, and rather less pretty in shape, but I had expended enough hard work on her to make me love her. No influential friend would have served me better. She had given me a chance to come out a bit—to find out what I could do. No, I don’t like work. I had rather laze about and think of all the fine things that can be done. I don’t like work—no man does—but I like what is in the work— the chance to find yourself. Your own reality—for yourself, not for others—what no other man can ever know. They can only see the mere show, and never can tell what it really means. ‘I was not surprised to see somebody sitting aft, on the deck, with his legs dangling over the mud. You see I rather chummed with the few mechanics there were in that station, whom the other pilgrims naturally despised—on account of their imperfect manners, I suppose. This was the foreman—a boiler-maker by trade—a good worker. He was a lank, bony, yellow-faced man, with big intense eyes. His aspect was worried, and his head was as bald as the palm of my hand; but his hair in falling seemed to have stuck to his chin, and had prospered in the new locality, for his beard hung down to his waist. He was a widower with six young children (he had left them in charge of a sister of his to come out there), and the passion of his life was pigeon-flying. He was an enthusiast and a connoisseur. He would rave about pigeons. After work hours he used sometimes to come over from his hut for a talk about his children and his pigeons; at work, when he had to crawl in the mud under the bottom of the steamboat, he would tie up that beard of his in a kind of white serviette he brought for the purpose. It had loops to go over his ears. In the evening he could be seen squatted on the bank rinsing that wrapper in the creek with great care, then spreading it solemnly on a bush to dry. ‘I slapped him on the back and shouted, ‘We shall have  rivets!’ He scrambled to his feet exclaiming, ‘No! Rivets!’as though he couldn’t believe his ears. Then in a low voice, ‘You … eh?’ I don’t know why we behaved like lunatics. I put my finger to the side of my nose and nodded mysteriously. ‘Good for you!’ he cried, snapped his fingers above his head, lifting one foot. I tried a jig. We capered on the iron deck. A frightful clatter came out of that hulk, and the virgin forest on the other bank of the creek sent it back in a thundering roll upon the sleeping station. It must have made some of the pilgrims sit up in their hovels. A dark figure obscured the lighted doorway of the manager’s hut, vanished, then, a second or so after, the doorway itself vanished, too. We stopped, and the silence driven away by the stamping of our feet flowed back again from the recesses of the land. The great wall of vegetation, an exuberant and entangled mass of trunks, branches, leaves, boughs, festoons, motionless in the moonlight, was like a rioting invasion of soundless life, a rolling wave of plants, piled up, crested, ready to topple over the creek, to sweep every little man of us out of his little existence. And it moved not. A deadened burst of mighty splashes and snorts reached us from afar, as though an icthyosaurus had been taking a bath of glitter in the great river. ‘After all,’ said the boiler-maker in a reasonable tone, ‘why shouldn’t we get the rivets?’ Why not, indeed! I did not know of any reason why we shouldn’t. ‘They’ll come in three weeks,’ I said confidently. ‘But they didn’t. Instead of rivets there came an invasion, an infliction, a visitation. It came in sections during the next three weeks, each section headed by a donkey carrying a white man in new clothes and tan shoes, bowing from that elevation right and left to the impressed pilgrims. A quarrelsome band of footsore sulky niggers trod on the heels of the donkey; a lot of tents, camp-stools, tin boxes, white cases, brown bales would be shot down in the courtyard, and the air of mystery would deepen a little over the muddle of the station. Five such instalments came, with their absurd air of disorderly flight with the loot of innumerable outfit shops and provision stores, that, one would think, they were lugging, after a raid, into the wilderness for equitable division. It was an inextricable mess of things decent in themselves but that human folly made look like the spoils of thieving.

Recapping

June 2011 I land to London. An escape planned since a long time to get away from an oppressive mentality and a hard and harder economic situation. An escape which was also my last attempt to reignite my marriage, which for some years had been troubled: a desperate attempt to force my wife to take a decision that she was unable to take.
To quit has been the mistake. All that followed has been built upon that mistake. After few months I began a new relationship, with a girl of who I have often spoken on this blog. I knew, in the heart of my heart, that she would have forsaken me. It was something I had seen. But sometimes we must walk a path even if it's not our own path. And so I did, for two years and a half. By that girl I learned to hate London, I learned to look at the world without naivety, and many more things. I loved her with all my heart, I made her feeling wrong, I hurt her keeping with me the ghost of my wife and a bond I couldn't broke. For her I gave up to all my projects and all my dreams and for her I stayed in a city I despise, I endured a job and a life style which got me fading away, depriving me of my willpower. For her I accepted to be branded as the one always dissatisfied, always unhappy and infecting everybody with his discontentment. Then her job, which she loved more than me in the end, took her away from me, as I had foreseen two years earlier.
I had arrived to the end of a path which had brought me back to the starting point. On Spring 2014 I was alone again, but without my dreams to support me. Maybe to punish myself for my own mistakes, maybe because really certain that another relationship would have made impossible a second escape, I entertained myself in a life style which wasn't mine, changing many women, refusing a stable relationship to all, hurting some, pissing off all of them. But I never lied to them, and maybe was exactly this to make them furious. Meanwhile I had begun frenetically to look for a job out of London, and even better out of the United Kingdom. But something still tied me to London: a second woman ghost who didn't let me go. Or that I didn't let go, as I hadn't let go the first one.
After one year of useless job applications and even more useless women, I realized I was sinking in depression, and a short time later I gave up women. Or rather, realizing that what I needed was a relationship and not a row of unsatisfactory adventures, I opened myself to the possibility of a relationship and started to meet only those women interested in a relationship. One by one, all those women who had hinted to such an interest, shown themselves more useless than those who had spread their legs for me for and afternoon or a night of sexual dissatisfaction. In words women want a long-lasting relationship, actually they are frightened by it. A conspicuous phone book was reduced in few months to a very short list, to which I added new numbers pretty much every week  just to delete them in the span of one or two weeks. The job applications carried on with intermittence, now determined to quit, then resigned to stay in a city which is the sum of all human's sins. Until...
Until something snapped inside me. Back from a short vacation to Iceland, a land which enthralled me and where I was sure I could get back in touch with my most inner self, I started to set new goals, I started again to dream. Then, at an art fair, I found and bought a painting which had triggered something in me, making me to understand that I couldn't wait any more who wouldn't be back. With this awareness I stopped avoiding my ex-girlfriend, I met her again after a long time and something she said, in a way that had a false easiness to it, severed the last string bonding me to her. I still love her, as I still love my wife, but now I understand that there's no sense in keep bleeding for somebody who doesn't want to stay with me.
Nothing more held me in London, something had changed in my attitude, and among the jobs I applied for during the last Christmas time there was one in the Caribbean.
Here I've summarized shortly my last five years and a journey which brought me from the Appennini Mountains to the grey sky of London and then under the harsh Caribbean sun. I can't say that here I'll be happy. I can't say that here I will put down those roots I need. I don't know if one day I'll go back to Italy. Neither if after some time I will wonder for the world again. But there's something which is sure: I resumed marching on that path which coils on itself to shape the Labyrinth. I'm not still any more and move towards its dead end, where God waits for all of us.

...when I couldn't get out of it.

(yeah) (yo)
You were that foundation
Never gonna be another one, no.
I followed, so taken
So conditioned I could never let go
Then sorrow, then sickness
Then the shock when you flip it on me
So hollow, so vicious
So afraid I couldn't let myself see
That I could never be held
Back or up no, I'll hold myself
Check the rep, yep you know mine well
Forget the rest let them know my hell
There and back yet my soul ain't sell
Kept respect up,the best they fell,
Let the rest be the tale they tell
That I was there saying…

[Chorus]
[Chester:]
In these promises broken
Deep below
Each word gets lost in the echo
So one last lie I can see through
This time I finally let you
Go, go, go.

Test my will, test my heart
Let me tell you how the odds gonna stack up
Y'all go hard, I go smart
How's that working out for y'all in the back, huh?
I've seen that frustration
Been crossed and lost and told "No"
And I've come back unshaken
Let down and lived and let go
So you can let it be known
I don't hold back, I hold my own
I can't be mapped, I can't be cloned
I can't C-flat, it ain't my tone
I can't fall back, I came too far
Hold myself up and love my scars
Let the bells ring wherever they are
'Cause I was there saying...

[Chorus]
[Chester:]
In these promises broken
Deep below
Each word gets lost in the echo
So one last lie I can see through
This time I finally let you go!!!
Go, go, go.

No, you can tell 'em all now
I don't back up, I don't back down
I don't fold up, and I don't bow
I don't roll over, don't know how
I don't care where the enemies are
Can't be stopped, all I know; go hard
Won't forget how I got this far
For every time saying…

[Chorus]
[Chester:]
In these promises broken
Deep below
Each word gets lost in the echo
So one last lie I can see through
This time I finally let you
Go, go, go. (Go, go, go)
Go. go, go. (Go, go, go)

It's been just a short time ago...

(When this began)
I had nothing to say
And I get lost in the nothingness inside of me
(I was confused)
And I let it all out to find
That I’m not the only person with these things in mind
(Inside of me)
But all that they can see the words revealed
Is the only real thing that I’ve got left to feel
(Nothing to lose)
Just stuck, hollow and alone
And the fault is my own, and the fault is my own

[Chorus]
I wanna heal, I wanna feel what I thought was never real
I wanna let go of the pain I’ve felt so long
(Erase all the pain till it’s gone)
I wanna heal, I wanna feel like I’m close to something real
I wanna find something I’ve wanted all along
Somewhere I belong

And I’ve got nothing to say
I can’t believe I didn’t fall right down on my face
(I was confused)
Looking everywhere only to find
That it’s not the way I had imagined it all in my mind
(So what am I)
What do I have but negativity
’Cause I can’t justify the way, everyone is looking at me
(Nothing to lose)
Nothing to gain, hollow and alone
And the fault is my own, and the fault is my own

[Repeat Chorus]

I will never know myself until I do this on my own
And I will never feel anything else, until my wounds are healed
I will never be anything till I break away from me
I will break away, I'll find myself today

[Repeat Chorus]

I wanna heal, I wanna feel like I’m somewhere I belong
I wanna heal, I wanna feel like I’m somewhere I belong
Somewhere I belong

Indopakistrani 3

-Ecchecazzopero'!

-Perche' dovrei crederti?
E a chi vuoi credere?

come tre anni fa.

A questo punto non devi lasciare
qui la lotta è più dura ma tu
se le prendi di santa ragione
insisti di più.

Sei testardo, questo è sicuro,
quindi ti puoi salvare ancora

Mentre tu sei l'assurdo in persona
e ti vedi già vecchio e cadente
raccontare a tutta la gente
del tuo falso incidente.

Mentre tu sei l'assurdo in persona
e ti vedi già vecchio e cadente
raccontare a tutta la gente
del tuo falso incidente.
