A lack of creativity

My first approach to the British gardening happened, several years ago, through a book by Andrew Wilson translated in Italian. It was about urban gardens, treating some of his early work in London. The gardens were generally simple, often using materials that nowadays we would call “recycled”. I was captivated by his work, and I often used it as inspiration for some of the gardens I made in Italy. Well, at least where the client’s budget allowed it. Gardening in Italy, especially in the area I’m from, is quite different from gardening in UK: there’s a huge chasm between the top end clients, who can afford paying for a project and every stages till the garden completion, and the common clients, who would prefer to do everything in its own to save money. In this chasm, more a moat to be honest, few intermediate customers swim or float, desiring a beautiful garden but wishing to spend little. Feeding my business mostly with the bottom end customers, since the top end were exclusive of the big plant nurseries in Pistoia, I tried to catch as often as possible clients from the wide moat. Not easy task, though.
Since England is famous for its people passion about gardens, I have to say that what I found in London left me quite disappointed. Probably such a passion seems bigger than it is because of the confront with the Italian reality, where too many people would like to cover their gardens with concrete or tarmac and can’t do it just thanks to the restrictive Italian laws. But even if the British situation is not so exciting as information arriving to Italy made me think, it’s still really inviting. It offers a lot of opportunities and much better wages respect to Italy. Well, much better if you don’t consider operative and supervisor wages and if you don’t make a comparison with the living costs. But this is an other story.
Probably for this big offer so many people were attracted in to the industry. Industry which offers, respect to Italy, a lot more chances for designers. And this is the sore point. I worked for some companies in these three years, had collaborations with many, had the chance to have a look to the work of even more. Honestly I can’t count the number of gardens I walked in during this time. And I don’t speak about projects and portfolios I could examine. A lot of them from the very top end. In the last period, since I started to look for a new job, it became even more intense. Well, too often, getting in a garden I’ve never been before, it was like a déjà vu. Red wood cedar, squared water features,  black slates. Poor planting, often with second choice plants. So many gardens looking alike. Less and less a real gardening made with plants.
A couple of weeks ago, during an interview, I asked to the designer I was speaking to, whose company’s work were pretty much all the same, if it was the market asking for that style or if it was the company choice. It was their choice: they replicated their own projects with the aim to use always the same materials, known as long-lasting and reliable. Any form of creativity had been sacrificed to pragmatism. Then I have to assume that other designers made the same choice. And that others simply lack the capability to create something in their own and can’t avoid to replicate somebody else work.
I have nothing against pragmatism. Especially when you have to maintain the garden, you can’t fancy extravagances. But a silly design is something extraneous to creativity. And in the same way pragmatism and creativity don’t exclude each other. Even the scarcity of creativity in itself wouldn’t be so bad. Design involves it, of course, but the history of art is plenty of “duplicators” who dug a niche for themselves copying the masters’ works and never created an original work. Not everybody can be creative. But... there are so many sources to draw from!!!

I have to say that this situation worries me a little bit. I found very little of original in London, and that little was mostly made in the past. The nowadays metropolis is interested just in making money, this philosophy have infected a big number of people. An old system to loyalize the clients is to make them used to your product. Never change it, always keep the same standards. It has been with the wine, for example: same colour, same flavour, same taste year after year. In the end the client will dislike anything different. How much time before the tasteless customers, fed by a generation of creativit(y)less designers, will have all the old, original, hidden gardens of London covered with red wood cedar and black slabs? As Monico palace in Piccadilly Circus has been covered with advertising neon lights, so will the charm of a city be covered with pragmatism?

To take the chicken out of the hoven

To take the chicken out of the hoven is my main duty at the Olympic Park. Even now that the contract is about to finish.
Yesterday I got a day off, the second of two paid off-days allowed to us by the company for having interviews. I received a call on Wednesday in which was asked me if I was available for an interview the very next day. I asked to my line manager, he said I could, so I booked the interview. Less then an hour later another manager called me, saying that me and my team had an induction for the Crossrail site for the next morning.  Shit... I'm off tomorrow... How much time will the induction take? An hour, an hour and half? Ok, I'll come for the induction.
The induction took more then five hours. A useless five hours long induction, in a room where we breathed CO2 instead of oxygen, listening to the same thing we had listened in other three or four similar inductions for other similar sites. Only difference with the other site was that the high visibility wear have to be orange instead of yellow like in to the Park. With such a beginning, I understood that everything would have been a mess. I just didn't immagine how much.
-How much time will this job take?- I asked to the manager.
-I think the whole morning. Do you have other to do?
Other to do? We just killed the time last weeks at the Park. I have nothing to do.
This morning, with our orange high visibility vests, we follow the manager to the Crossrail. So far from the railway, with a four meters high wall to separate us from it, that the question was natural: What fuck had we got the induction for???
We had all the needed tools for a "morning job" with us. The concern that we had to wear "all orange" was discarded by the manager. When I saw the job, was immediately clear that a morning was far to be sufficient. The job consisted of weeding a wild flower bank, then strimming down the wild flowers and remove the debris. Some things to consider: the weeds were much more than the wild flowers; nothing had been done the previous year, so a thick lay of dead stuff and rubbish was hidden under the plants; we had to share the area with some builders using diggers and dumpers; our van was not allowed in.
-For this job-, I said, -we need at least three people for three days. And that in normal conditions.
   -Normal conditions?
-It means that any of those days is Friday and that any of those people has been fired as we have been. I'll do my best, but you can't push on someone who's been fired. How can you threat him? To fire him?
-We have till Monday to complete this job. We don't have three days.
Great. -Could we come tomorrow, eventually?
-I'm sorry-, the site manager said. -No one is allowed here on Saturday.
Fair enough. But the most funny detail was that we had to wear orange trousers.
My company doesn't have orange trousers. And it wouldn't be a big problem if a manager manages the job, in other words if he makes a survey of the site to check what we must do and if he checks what is needed and what is compulsory in a specific site that has its own rules different from the rest f the Park. It's clear to everybody that he had not done anything of that. So, where to find orange trousers? Silly question. In to the skip, obviously.
Rummaging in a skip he and the site manager found a trousers. Stinky of rat piss.
-Take this so you can start. I'm going to the shop to buy another two pairs.
   -Maybe you can buy three.
   -Sure.
I had to refuse, I know. But when I have a job in front of me I have to do it, it doesn't matter what I have to endure to solve the problem. So I got the stinky trosuers while the manager was going to the shop.
In my team I have an English and a Moldavian. The English started immediately to complain.
-I don't wear stuff tken from a skip!
-Don't worry. I'll wear this. Paul is going to the shop to buy new ones.
It was 10:30 when he came back, with just another trousers. A dirty, torn pair found in another skip. The right chance for the English member of the team to flee away.
-You can bring me to the other team, so I don't have to sit in the van doing nothing whole day.
You can sit in to the van chatting all day, instead. Doesn't matter, feel free to go. It's clear you don't feel part of the team. We'll be better without you.

So far, we cut down half part of the wild flower. We didn't weed, of course. The weeds will have to stay there, or they will give us more time to do the job. When we left the site we threw away the trousers and I sent a text to Paul, the manager:

Provide three new orange trousers for Monday
if we have to complete the job, please.
Igor's are torn and I had enough to wear
rat piss stinking stuff got from the skip.

His answer:

 I will.

What do you bet I will not go back to the Crossrail site on Monday?

#bloodyinterviews

The question they shouldn't never ask during a job interview: -Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Say Yo! who never received this question. How did you answer it?
"Where I see myself in 5 years? In a better position, of course."
What should I answer you!? And if you and your flaming company are available to let me grow we will be all in a better position in 5 years. Instead, if you will not let me do it, I will do it in another place! In 5 years!

You and your silly questions...

What about the Good Boys?

The Good Boys were some of the agency guys who worked at the Olympic Park with me. I had them under my supervision for a while, then thank haven they were moved to other teams. The reason I called them Good Boys is here.
Coming the contract at the Park close to its natural end, they were one after another dropped off. The first was Dan. He was used don't turn up on Monday, nor to advise nor to answer at the phone when his awaiting supervisor called him. Kept for a while, since was not possible having new labourers inducted, a Monday the line manager decided that enough was enough. He called the agency to say that we had no more need of Dan. The agency got back in touch 15 minutes later and said:
-We told him. Well... actually we left a message in his voicemail, since he didn't answer.
Then was the turn of Paul and Simon to be dropped off. And after a week Gary's turn. Actually Gary wasn't a Good Boy. Even if not a great worker he was a dedicated and reliable person.
Yesterday I asked to Chris, Hellboy-Chris, if he had any news about them. The last I had were about interviews arranged for them by the agency.
-Did they have a job?- I asked.
-What do you think?- Chris replied with a simper.
-I don't think so.
-Paul went to the interview, the interviewers just looked at him and said "Ah, okay. It's fine. We don't need you".
It's not a surprise. Paul is a clever guy, but lazy and not fit at all for gardening. In any case he lived on benefits for 2 years before working at the Park, so he knows what to do to claim the allowance again.
-Simon-, Chris got on, -hasn't got any job and has come back to sell drug. The same thing he did before coming at the Park.
-Selling drug? Weed I hope...
-You don't make a lot of money selling weed.
-Ok, fair enough.
-About Dan, he got a dislocation at his shoulder... he said practicing martial arts but I believe he got it laying to long on the bed... and his GP is signing paid days out of work, so he is happy.
-What about Gary?
-He hasn't got any job yet.
-This surprises me. He's a reliable guy.
-True. Apparently there are not a lot of jobs on this time.

Except for Gary, the other three don't seem eager to find another job. And why should they? Since Mum Britain is available to pay for them. But it will not last for longer, apparently. So what to do with the waisted generation Cameron spoke about? Those youth who should be prefered by employers to Eastern Europeans? Mum Britain, you didn't teach your children a job-ethic, you are going to cut their benefits off if they don't get one of those jobs that you had already cut off, shall they pay for your graetness?

Raving Metropolis 2

The Demon was hungry. Fed for centuries with souls and blood of throngs of foreign populations, slaves and servants brought from overseas, it never was sated. Nestled in the depths of the Metropolis, vital system of the Metropolis itself, its hunger was the city’s hunger. The Pale Lords, concealed in to shady offices or in to sunny dwellings on the hills, perceived the Demon’s craving and they were afraid of it. It had been grown too much during the centuries past since the founding of the Metropolis, and it still grew. Some of the Pale Lords dreaded it would drain every vital fluid of the nation, others simply laughed of their fears, already completely subdued to the Demon’s desires.
The Metropolis, with its millions of unaware to be servants, lived those days without thinking that its destiny laid underneath of it, in the guise of a unhinged creature, ready to doom the city and lose it in madness and rage. But the Pale Lords could clearly see increasing tensions, the points where the social fabric was wearing out due the Demon’s  insatiable hunger. The commerce got on, new works of art and technique were made every day, youth from other nations crossed the sea to study in its schools. But new nations and old foe powers looked up in the mist of far off lands, the merchants came back full-loaded of tasteless fruits and foods which didn’t feed, the works of the artists repeated themselves alike and were forgotten soon.
But it had to get on feeding the Demon. It was unavoidable. Feeding the Demon meant to make the Metropolis live, starving the Demon to make him powerless meant to kill the Metropolis. New life was given to the city through the entropy, otherwise the city would have languished until burn out. The banners were called, the men were drafted: the Pale Lords were planning a new war. But the nation was in decadence, little remains of the ancient empire, the grip on the colonies was still lethal and yet unsure. The inventiveness and the genius lacked among the local population, while more and more foreigner climbed up the social scale undermining the Pale Lords’ power.
The struggle began. The population were induced to sacrifice their lives to the Demon: spirit, flesh and blood. The Demon had to be fed, because its strength was the nation’s strength, it was the Pale Lords’ strength. It was a perfidious and not proclaimed conflict, to weaken the neighbour states, to re-establish the posses on the overseas riches and get of new ones. The internal weaknesses were laid on the poorest foreign classes, on who were considered expendable. The wealth was directed to sustain the war effort and the overseas armies, to strengthen the mechanism of power. As worse the population conditions became as stronger the Demon grew. As bigger the Demon’s strength became as bigger its hunger grew. New riches flowed irregularly for a provisional flourishing of the nation, but the beneficiaries were less and less at each time as the Demon’s share became bigger. The real struggle was to sustain the Demon.
Above the Demon’s dwelling, people walked unaware. They lived their lives in a more and more repetitively manner, they loved every day less and less, listening to the invitations to greed and hatred. People lost something of themselves every day, but didn’t pay attention to it. The memory of the past and traditions became blurred. Curiosity and interest in what was not everyday life became drowsy. Many lost the ability to experience them at all. Hedonistic pleasures were raised to dogmas to fill the void of their lives up. Many were not alive any more, but they didn’t cognize it. Hatred and dissatisfaction brewed into hearts which didn’t pulsate; delight for life has been sacrificed to the necessity of sustaining the war effort. When the rage burst among the most miserable, it was suppressed with method much worse than blood-shed: the spirit was ripped out from the flesh and killed, then indifference to everything and everybody was drafted in its place. The Metropolis grew crowded of strangers, of cold people unconcerned of each other. Everything has been taken away from the masses: dignity, love of life, capability to appreciate the beautiful things and to believe in something superior. In exchange they got the belief to be the chosen people. The sacrifice to the Nation, the sacrifice to the Demon, had become their unutter religion.

After had killed the Spirits of Earth, the Pale Lords got ready to kill Earth itself to rip its riches off and feed them to the Demon. And the Demon, laying into the darkness of the Metropolis’ underground, laughed, emitting demented gurgles.

Austerity? Yes, please.

I Senzavoce

Cosa vedo? Vedo i pensieri, come onde, come maree. Vedo una superficie d'acqua scura e immota. Deve essere calda, piacevole sulla pelle. Voglio distendermici e lasciarmi affondare. Silenzio e calore?
Ci terrorizza.

Qualcosa si muove sotto di me. E lento risale in superficie.

-Possiamo andare stasera-, rispondo. -Solo noi o invitiamo gli amici?
-Invita tutti.

LaBufala a Charingh Cross stasera?
Ritrovo h 6 alla stazione.

Dopo non molto cominciano le risposte.

Ale mi piacerebbe sl ke alle 11
devo essere a casa :(... a ke ora?

e ti chiamerò "the limping sadist".

Mica zoppico, io... Comunque no, non viene.

Quindi... no grazie. I londinesi, ovviamente.
   This is London. Enjoy.

Nothing else matters

So close no matter how far
Couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trust in who we are
And nothing else matters

Never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don't just say
And nothing else matters

Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters

Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
But I know

So close no matter how far
Couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
And nothing else matters

Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
But I know

I never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don't just say
And nothing else matters

Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters

Never cared for what they say
Never cared for games they play
Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
And I know (yeah!)

So close no matter how far
Couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trust in who we are
No nothing else matters

Racism is everywhere

Pesce, vino bianco e limoncello.

It was on the train from Paris to London, at the end of the short holiday that me and my girlfriend enjoyed in the French capital, that I heard an American girl say to a couple of her compatriots: "They really love eating. They are always eating and I can't understand why they don't get fat!"

Something urged me to stand and say: "Dear girl, this is the difference between a civil population and the barbarians." I didn't say it, and I'm regretting it. Just a little bit.
I don't believe that many people, among English mother tongue speakers, can understand the subtle pleasure of having dinner with salmon, white wine and limoncello. I don't intend, here, to praise the crapula. But why don't take pleasure in something we have to do anyway? Many Britons I met are like they have the gustative buds sanded down by the junk food they are used eating. All they are interested in is just fulling up their bellies. And, apparently, many Americans as well. A big part of the joy I experimented in Paris was due to the food, about which I wrote here. The French cusine has been the first cusine out of two in the world to receive the recognition of Human Heritage from UNESCO, and honestly, it's something that everybody should learn to appreciate. Because some food don't just feed the body, but can feed the spirit too.

Applications game

Alessio, we really don't want to loose you. At work it was repetead many times to me. In addition to the all usual reassurances. They were happy about how I worked (I took the chicken out of the hoven many times for them at the Olympic Park) and aware of the potentiality of growth I was for the company. After all, when you want to upgrade from ground maintenance to landscaping you must have at least one gardener in your team. But... if there isn't work, it doesn't matter how strong they want to keep you with them. The Olympic Park is at its completion, the company has lost a couple of big contracts and there are no other jobs, so they are sending all of us at home.

To be sacked is not pleasant, even when you expect it, even more if you expected a different reason. I expected something like: Sorry Alessio, but you're the most expensive among the labour and we can't afford to keep you. I expected something like that. Instead the reason is quite different and it doesn't depend on the company's will (maybe on its incapacity to make good use of the visibility came working at the Olympic Park), and they have been so correct to tell it to us one month and half before the end of the work, risking to have no staff to complete the job. Many companies would have said it at the last moment, th evening for the next morning. Other companies did so.

Beyond to be displeased to leave the first company which I've been well in two years and half in London, what really I worry about is how much hard is to setlle permanently when you live in London. To get something stable is really hard: friends come, pass and get lost. Who goes back to Italy, who has to move due its job, or maybe you are the one who moved, and getting on to meet become difficult because of the distance. Since to find a new job close the one you had to leave is not so easy. It doesn't matter how strongly you have decided that no, this time I will not move, somebody else will decide for you.

In this way the whole sequence starts again: checking the job offers, applying, getting the interviews. Why do you want to work for us? Why?! But for the money, of course! But you can't say this. You have to say that you believe that working for them will allow you to grow professionally or some other similar bullshit. For God's sake, it's not wrong, but it remains the money what I want. If I don't earn enough I don't give a fuck of being professional. That maybe it's the opposite, it's you that working for them make a favour to them, allowing them to grow professionally.

What's really hard in such a situation when you are in London, is that you need to start everything afresh. You don't have a family to give you a firm point, I just said that friends come and go (or maybe it's you to come and to go), you have to restart with new coworkers. And if you end to work far away, you have even to find a new accomodation.
It's the Applications Game.

Xenophobia

Chi rallenta viene travolto.

We live lives made of electrons, stealing the time to ourselves.  We walk along empty road, where the crowd’s yell dins us. We stripped the future of its own past, chased the hope to stifle it. We keep hidden our dreams, since if not we would kill them. We are afraid of knowing, since who knows burden himself  of responsibility. We gratify our bodies, since we’re not anymore able to satisfy the spirit.

Who slows down is overwhelmed. The metal shrieks and the concrete  considers us silently. We find out metal grafts in our flesh and are surprise to have a soul. To stop at the edge of the road looking the world to pass by, just to be trampled and reassembled. A river of oil to grease our feelings, a thin red thread of  blood to link fathers and sons. We are unknown to each other.

The foreigner is among us, the xenos, the guest, the intruder.  The stranger is us, stranger to ourselves, stranger to our children, stranger to our partners. The walk becomes solitary, we have lost the communal path. It’s sad we must find solace in what shouldn’t exist, it’s bitter that are wrong practices to soothe our sorrow.

Nobody has ever thought us to love.
