Parigi da mangiare/Paris to eat

Just back, me and my girlfriend, from 6 days in Paris. We went there with the warning that it was a "dear city", and earing such a thing when you live in London...well, it's scaring. And looking at the menus of restaurants in Montmartre I had a chill. And no chance to save money eating pizza. Even British tourist guides warn against Parisian pizzas, bad and expensive.

Apparently, the alternative is between spending a load of money eating in restaurants where is not sure what they cook and how, or risking an intestinal cancer eating junk food. I don't know what a osso bucco is, but it's supposed to be an Italian dish, since I took the picture at an Italian restaurant. Even a poor dish as frog (which I desired to taste again after many years) costs at least 8 euros as starter, then you can imagine the size of the portion. Making the count, to spend around 60 euros for a starter and another dish for two, plus a glass of wine each,it doesn't worth.

But since I'm becoming fond of astroarcheology, as who have read this knows, how to try traditional food without spending to much? The solution was a friend suggestion, a gastronomy, that in Paris is called charcuterie. Often the same shop is both boucherie, or rather butcher shop, and charcuterie. There's the chance to eat hot dishes too, or at least warmed up in the microwave. Went to the signaled charcuterie we bought enough for some meals. The first dish we tried was tete du veau with potatoes, which I didn't take any photos of, so I put one from Google. It's just veal head, but prepared in an excellent way, and after two years eating tasteless British food it was like a mystic experience. After I was taken by a feeling of happiness and that content sleepiness which normally arrives just after you have made love. I needed a bit of time to realize that we had not eaten in a chic restaurant, but microwave warmed up food, in a plastic box, with plastic forks, sitting on a bench in a public park.

Other food I suggest is viande de grisson, even if it's Swiss and not French and really similar to Italian spek...

...and fromage de tete, that is meat and not cheese...

...poitrine de porc braisee, that is roasted pork but with a special seasoning...

...the andouillette, a salami made with pork entrails. The smell is not inviting, but I suggest you don't sniff it and just eat it: you will not repent of it...

...and at the end pate' en croute canard with figs and foie gras. Even if you tried foie gras and you didn't like it, don't think about that since the taste is not dominant. We ate everything with pain des amis, a natural 48 hours raised bread which at the third day was still good.

And then there are many fromageries, shops selling mainly cheese, and at the street markets you can pay really good fruit even 1 euro per kilo. An Italian way of say is "Don't let the farmer know how good is cheese with pears": it means that you can have a meal or two on cheese basis. Then, without beverages, in Paris it's possible to have a really good meal for just 3.50 euros per person.

If you don't like cold dishes, many shops sell hot dishes. For about 6 euros you can have, for example, roasted lamb with beans or sausages with pure' (that is not mash potato, you know).

But if you really want to eat in a restaurant, why not a great seafood? Paris has really fresh and good fish. We casually found a Peruvian restaurant (I know, eating in a Peruvian restaurant in Paris is weird). El Pulpo, placed in Square Caulincourt corner Rue Lamarck, doesn't look great from outside...

...and inside is even smaller then it looks from outside, but you can eat dishes like these chevizes with onion and sweet potato. Delicious fish costed, with beers and cake, just 32 euros.

Per concludere, due indirizzi di ottime charcuteries:
In the end, the addresses of two great charcuteries:

Boucherie Montmartroise, 3 rue Ramey 75018, Paris a nord
Gilles Verot, 3 rue Notre-Dame des Champs, Paris a sud

Rimanete sintonizzati.

I'll soon write about where having a breakfast, street markets and public parks in Paris. Stay tune.
